Alf van Rensburg

I am a Senior Electrical Engineer with broad experience across HV/LV power systems, mining infrastructure, heavy industry, fixed plant, automation, process control, operational technology, asset reliability and project delivery.

My career began in integrated steelmaking and developed through electrical engineering, process control, automation, systems integration, project management, maintenance reliability and industrial consulting. This gives me a practical systems view of industrial problems: power distribution, control systems, plant behaviour, maintainability, reliability, operational risk and business performance all need to work together.

I solve complex industrial problems by returning to first principles, building clear systems and frameworks, and applying technology only where it creates practical value.

I have performed roles including:

  • Senior Electrical Engineer
  • Electrical Maintenance and Reliability Engineer
  • Process Control and Automation Engineer
  • Consultant
  • Programme and Project Manager
  • Project Cost Controller
  • Engineering and technical team leader

My work has included HV and LV distribution systems, substations, transformers, switchgear, motor control centres, protection systems, variable speed drives, PLC/SCADA systems, operational technology, manufacturing information systems, process automation, safety systems, industrial networks and business systems integration.

As an electrical engineer, I have designed, specified, reviewed, commissioned and supported systems for mining, ports, smelting, steelmaking, heavy minerals, precious metals recovery, catalyst recycling, transportation infrastructure and standalone renewable power systems. This has included load studies, arc flash analysis, protection coordination, cable sizing, electrical network upgrades, transformer replacements, switchboard replacements, VSD upgrades, commissioning procedures and operational readiness.

As a process control and automation engineer, I have delivered systems that made industrial processes safer, more stable and more productive. These include automatic control of electric arc furnace steelmaking, continuous caster breakout prevention, heavy minerals furnace breakout detection, manufacturing information systems, PLC/SCADA migrations and real-time operational reporting from the plant floor to management.

As a maintenance and reliability engineer, I have supported live operating plants where production continuity matters. I have replaced and upgraded mission-critical plant, managed obsolete electrical equipment, developed maintenance and reliability strategies, supported root cause analysis, improved asset performance, and worked closely with operations and maintenance teams to keep complex industrial systems safe and available.

As a consultant and project manager, I have delivered technology, automation, information systems and engineering projects across industrial and business environments. This has included greenfield heavy minerals operations management systems, SAP R/3 integration with process control systems, large-scale business systems migration, EPCM project controls, and industrial technology change programmes.

A recurring theme in my career has been the practical use of engineering, automation and information to improve industrial performance. I am not interested in technology for its own sake. I am interested in systems that work, risks that are understood, decisions that can be defended, and improvements that survive contact with the plant.

Rational Rain reflects that approach.

The focus is practical industrial improvement: using electrical engineering, automation, data, reliability thinking and systems integration to make operations safer, more reliable, more visible and more productive.

The aim is to help industrial businesses make better decisions, improve plant performance, reduce operational risk and create value now and into the future.
